Preview: The Glitch (an original Indonesian scifi film)

Posted by thefraix on January 25, 2009

We dedicate our first review to Mr. David Poernomo, a filmmaker and brother of Jose Poernomo who is currently making The Glitch. Interview source here.

In this time where most Indonesians are either (low key) humor or (uneducating) horror films, Poernomo is creating this, which is meant to educate its audience and an alternative for the smart moviegoers who are sick of the other genres.

“Saya mau bikin film yang selangkah lebih maju, ngga mau takabur sih, tapi pertama kali rasanya sebuah film sci-fi drama yang lebih pintar untuk penonton Indonesia,” Poernomo said in a recent interview.

Coincidently, the number of Indonesian scifi films are very limited compared to the other genres.

“Inilah movie yang kita persembahkan untuk mereka yang tertarik dengan genre lain.”

said David Poernomo.

Anyway, here’s the basic premise: Recent analysis of the 2004 tsunami disaster (which afflicted Aceh, Thailand and others) the Earth’s rotation stopped for 3 milliseconds. These three milliseconds might not seem much, but was enough to cause time-spatial anomalies that screws up the characters’ lives.

As with most Indonesian productions, here are some challenges they will face:
Acting talent, visual effects and the script.
Those three are all connected and SIGNIFICANTLY important.

If either one of them fails, I see no hope for this movie to succeed.

One more thing, David Poernomo is the director of the (ugh) Pocong vs Kuntilanak.

We’re Moving!

Posted by thefraix on January 23, 2009

Officially today,
I’ll no longer posting any more on this blog.

Inascifi’s blog is moving to http://www.inascifi.com

The main reason is because we have long had our own domain.
Second is, I don’t want you readers to think of inascifi dot blogspot dot com. Wouldn’t it be faster to just type inascifi.com ?

See you on the other side!

Renovatio

Posted by thefraix on January 20, 2009

Renovatio.

That’s a very good latin term I’ve learned four years ago from Michael Bay’s 2005 action packed film, The Island. The protagonist (Lincoln Six-Echo) of the story had this dream of being on a ship bearing that name, heading to the Island, a place where all people dream to go.

Renovatio… Renewel. Restoration. Rebirth

That is the sense that I’m carrying as I begin this blog.

The domain Inascifi.com has been around since 2006. Before then, the eGroup ina_sci-fi was established in 2000. Its purpose was to gather Indonesians as well those who speak Bahasa Indonesia (and English) into a forum of science fiction fans.

Yet, my attempts to start up an Indonesian scifi community was met with mediocre results.

Getting the scifi community moving in was a challenge. Biggest among them all is to get the members to particapte. The most reason lack of participation was because the members either have little access to the Internet for leisure activity, or they’re just too busy to take notice of it.

So in November 2008, I started the Inascifi blog (in http://inascifi.blogspot.com) which already contain several posts. If any of you “new readers” would like to catch up with the previous posts, you can check these old links:
November 17 2008: Inascifi blog is online
November 25 2008: Most anticipated (scifi) movies for 2009
December 8 2008: Penggunaan Bahasa Indonesia yang Baik dan Benar
January 2 2008: Happy New Year!
January 2 2008: Movie Review: The Spirit
January 17 2008: My opinions on 2009′s summer (scifi) blockbusters

In the future I’ll probably re-post them all here.

Plans for future project:
- Add more reviews, in these categories of movies, tv series, video games and books.
- Publish articles regarding science fiction concepts (i.e. time travel, cloning)
- Recruit more staff members.

Well, please wish me luck in my future endeavor with this website.

Movie Review: The Spirit

Posted by thefraix on January 2, 2009

Okay guys and folks.

This will be my first movie review of this year.

The Spirit. Official link

Watch it: If you like comic movies, don’t mind the combination of live action and colorful graphics.
Avoid it: If you hate films based comics, films don’t do justice to the source material.

Directed by Frank Miller (Sin City, 300).
Casts: Gabriel Macht, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendez

The Spirit is a somewhat a detective noir film, thrown in a masked vigilante/(super)hero (who is working alongside the city’s police department), a nemesis (mad evil scientist), henchmen (who are mostly played by the same actor) and female characters (all except one, does not fall for the masked hero).

The storyline in my opinion is quite decent, and I do like the dialogue and costume styles. Of course, some elements of the film get a bit over the top, like how do every girl fall in love with The Spirit, and the main villain of the movie (played by Samuel L. Jackson nevertheless) is very much enjoying himself as being The Man. The action is alright, but in some cases are more acceptable than the disorienting gritty fights in The Dark Knight.
One thing I should highlight is the humor. In many scenes the dialogue can be very very hilarious! I’m not kidding.

Overall rating: B or 7 out of 10 stars.

Happy New Year!

Penggunaan Bahasa Indonesia yang Baik dan Benar

Posted by thefraix on December 8, 2008

Most anticipated (scifi) movies for 2009

Posted by thefraix on November 26, 2008

Wow, we’re close to the end of 2008 and the year 2009 is just right on the horizon.

Now, being a blog related to science fiction I find it imperative for me to write something about that year.

Aside the upcoming new year’s resolutions (don’t ask me what I had for 2008, leave that matter to my other blog), there will be some interesting scifi related flicks coming.

Here’s a brief list that I can come to mind, and a short description following them.
Note: Dates are listed as United States premiere dates… I’ve little info on Indonesian premiere dates)

1. Star Trek (May 9 2009) link
My most anticipated movie of 2009, awaited by millions of fans around the world. Well for one thing, it has been three years since Star Trek graced the airwaves. Unlike the last movie (Star Trek Nemesis), Star Trek will be a kind of ‘origin story’ for the original crew of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701.
Official synopsis: From director J.J. Abrams (“Mission: Impossible III,” “Lost” and “Alias”) and screenwriters Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman (“TRANSFORMERS,” “MI: III”) comes a new vision of the greatest space adventure of all time, “Star Trek,” featuring a young, new crew venturing boldly where no man has gone before.
A note for us Indonesians, the local distributor (Cineplex 21 or what other powers to be) has a bad history with this franchise. The demographic of the Indonesian movie goers seems to shun away from anything related to Star Trek (as it seems to be too geeky for their tastes) and thus the last two Trek movies to ever show here was Star Trek: Generations and Star Trek: First Contact. Star Trek Insurrection and Nemesis never came through the local distributors.
So a good question for us scifi enthusiasts in Indonesia would be, will Star Trek play here?

2. Terminator Salvation (May 22 2009) link
My 2nd most anticipated movie of 2009. This is both a sequel and prequel to first three Terminator movies. Unlike the previous ones, this will not feature Arnold Schwarzenegger as the pivotal terminator, and this one will prominently set in the post-Judgment Day future era.
Official synopsis: “Set in post-apocalyptic 2018, John Connor (Christian Bale), the man fated to be the leader of the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators, and the future he was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a Terminator whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet’s operations, where they find out a terrible secret that may lead to the possible annihilation of mankind.”
Okay, I had to cut the official synopsis a little bit since it spoils a good info regarding this movie. I take it’ll be very interesting

3. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (June 26 2009)
No official synopsis is out yet, but I can say this is a sequel to the 2007 blockbuster Transformers. Need I say more?

4. G.I.JOE: Rise of Cobra (August 2009)
Ah, the live-action movie based on one of my favorite 80′s cartoon series. The cast mix is quite interesting, and the costume design and storyline will make this show quite a worth. The Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity, a ultra elite international armed forces will face the rising force of COBRA.
From what I can tell from some leaked sources, the story will be set in the near future, and will feature familiar favorite GI Joe characters. But from the production stills and the plot, it is a far mature version than the old cartoon series.

5. X-Men Origins: Wolverine
(May 1 2009) link
Ah, Hugh Jackman as the Adamantium-laced bad-ass mutant Logan aka Wolverine. Snikt!!!! To be honest, I was a bit disappointed with X-Men: The Last Stand. But any movie that has Wolverine will definitely rock!

I know there are plenty of scifi productions coming next year, but I’ll save mentioning them for a later time.

Inascifi blog is online

Posted by thefraix on November 18, 2008

Hi guys…
this Inascifi blog is now online.

Hmmm.. oh yeah, some of you may be wondering, what on earth is Inascifi?

Well, Inascifi is a group, previously known as ina_sci-fi, which was later renamed to Inascifi.
Inascifi simply stands for Indonesian science fiction.
A far fetched acronmy of Inascifi would be Information, News and Adventures regarding Science Fiction.

Well, to be honest with you gentle readers, Inascifi was actually an idea for Indonesians to have a place to discuss science fiction literature and related information, but for the past few years, there hasn’t been much activity in the group.

Recently, there has been a Facebook group, a Friendster group, and much earlier, a Yahoogroup.
We even have a website, inascifi.com, which can use some really good update.

Anyway, I’ll post more about Inascifi and some scifi related info.

Arvin Nathanael Chandra
