Assumptions regarding Indonesians and science fiction

Posted by thefraix on July 2, 2012

Hi all! I’m doing my final revisions to my Master’s thesis… fixing a few grammatical and punctuation errors here and there, before I submit them to my university’s library.

Anyway, here are a few issues of science fiction in Indonesia that I mentioned in my thesis:
1) The shared assumption that science fiction is not popular in Indonesia; which leads to the problem of…
2) scarcity of science fiction-related materials in Indonesia
3) the assumption that most Indonesian science fiction fans would access the sf-related materials illegally.

What do you think about these three basic assumption?

  1. salmam Said,

i think why scifi genre has not grow in
indonesia its because the majority of indonesian investor would rather invest in a horror films with shallow story and famous stars. sci fi movies need deep story plot and more budget for special effects and nobody wants to invest with high risk…

  2. aldi_aditya Said,

Saya mahasiswa pascasarjana yang sedang menulis tesis mengenai karya fiksi ilmiah di indonesia, terutama karya Djokolelono. Saya punya beberapa pendapat mengenai tiga hal yang anda ajukan:

    [translated comment:
I'm a postgraduate student who is writing a thesis regardig Indonesian science fiction, especially the works of Djokolelono. I myself have a few opinions regarding those three things you mentioned:

    1. Science fiction isn't popular in Indonesia because the literary critics in Indonesia haven't view SF as a 'important' genre. The mainstreem works of Indonesian literature are dominated by the themes such as political, gender, and cultural, thus SF works are of subordinated and marginalised as popular works.

    2. The SF genre itself isn't hard to find in Indonesia, because the intersection between the people and SF works have begun since the 1890s with the translated works of Vurne's writings. SF have appeared in the forms of novels and comics, for example the works Kapten Komet in the 1950s.

    3. The assumption that SF fans will access illegal works is hard to sustain because the accessing illegal materials aren't just done by SF fans, but also by the larger community.

I would love to discuss this further through email.]
